Travel and tourism on this North Pacific island is the major industry here. After the Korean Tourism Board recently became the 120th tourism board joining the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP), their president, Professor Geoffrey Lipman, has been appointed as a Global Environmental Advisor by Woo Keun-min, the Governor of the Jeju Special Self Governing Province, Republic of South Korea. Professor Lipman is also the director of greenearth.travel

The Special Self Governing Province of Jeju is a green island that abounds with treasures. Its breathtaking natural environment, its beaches with emerald water and its welcoming people have long charmed visitors and made it one of the most visited islands in the world. The Province is also famous for its clean future and high-tech industries, its wellbeing food and spas centres as well as its biological resources.

Jeju has been recognized as a World Natural Heritage, a Biosphere Reserve and a Global Geopark. It is therefore the only place in the world that completes the triple crown of UNESCO, being certified in all three natural sciences.

Over the years, Jeju has established itself as a treasure island of the global citizens and a globally recognized green environment city that epitomizes Korea’s Green Growth. Looking at the future, Jeju is still very ambitious. It intends to become the Capital of World Environment by 2020 and a carbon free island by 2030.

For years, Professor Lipman has been working with Hon Maurice Strong to make Jeju Self Governing Province a key component of the World Environment University initiative, and with Professor Ko Chang Hoon to put in place a unique Global Travel and Tourism University component that will focus on Green Growth.

Professor Lipman said: Jeju is an exemplary and globally recognized environmental hub. Its visionary plan for the future is both ambitious and inspiring, and I am happy to help in its achievement as a Global Environmental Advisor.

He added: ICTP, together with its newest member the Korean Tourism Organisation, is committed to support the Green Growth and Quality initiatives of Korea in general, and of Jeju, in particular.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is an isolated island south-west of the mainland of Republic of Korea. It is located 154km from Mokpo, 304km from Busan, and 255.1km from Tsushima of Japan. To the east it is facing Tsushima and Nagasaki prefecture of Japan with the south sea and East China Sea in between. To the west, Jeju faces Shanghai, China with the East China Sea in between. To the south with the South China sea and to the north is the mainland of Republic of Korea with the South Sea in between.

The Korean Jeju-Nature’s paradise in the north pacific
Jeju Island has a mild oceanic climate throughout the year with the smallest annual temperature range in Republic of Korea. The temperature for the hottest summer months averages no more than 35.8 ℃ in Jeju City and 33.0 ℃ in Seogwipo City and no less than -2.3℃ in Jeju City and -2.7 ℃ in Seogwipo City for winter.

The island is 73km wide and 31km long with a total area of 1,848.85㎢. Jeju, the largest island in Republic of Korea, came into existence 700 to 1,200 thousand years ago when lava spewed from a sub-sea volcano and surfaced above the waters. Then 100 to 300 thousand years ago, another volcanic eruption formed Hallasan Mountain. The final volcanic eruption that took place approximately 25 thousand years ago created the crater lake, Baengnokdam, at the summit of the mountain.

Hallasan Mountain rises in the center of Jeju to 1950m above sea level. The rest of the island slopes down from its summit and is covered with dark gray volcanic rocks and volcanic ash soil. Relatively isolated from the rest of the world, the island’s nature has been well preserved in its prehistoric state. That is why traveling to Jeju is to travel back in time.

Jeju’s natural environment has been preserved as best as possible. The fantastically shaped rocks decorating the seashores, the hundreds of Oreums(secondary volcanos) and the rarest species of flora and fauna around the Baengnokdam lake are all treasures waiting to be discovered by visitors. One cannot see Jeju unless one looks. It is like seeing only trees before entering a forest.
