Ras Al Khaimah: A group of tourists spent an entire night on a mountain after a police rescue mission failed due to extreme darkness.

Two 32-year-old tourists from New Zealand and a 29-year-old tourist from South Africa were in Ras Al Khaimah to climb a mountain. They wanted to enjoy the cool weather after the recent snow fall.

Major Saeed Rashid Al Yamahi, who heads the Air Wing at RAK Police, said that his section received a report from the operation room informing them about three stranded tourists on top of a mountain.

He added that one of the tourists called the police from his mobile phone, saying they were visiting Galeelah mountain but that they were lost and were unable to find their way back.

Al Yamahi said the tourists approached the mountain on Friday evening.

He said once the Air Wing received the report, a fully equipped helicopter with a number of rescuers started a mission to reach the tourists and save them.

The team of rescuers kept constant contact with the stranded tourists on their mobile phones.

Al Yamahi said the extreme darkness on the mountain made it impossible for the team of rescuers to find the location of the tourists.

The rescuers asked the tourists to spend the night on the mountain after they ensured the tourists had enough water and food.

The next morning, the team carried out a new rescue mission which was successful.

The three tourists were found and brought back to Ras Al Khaimah where they were provided with the necessary medical check ups.

Al Yamahi said those who wish to climb the mountains must exercise caution.

He said the mountainous areas were very rugged and need special coordination with the authorities to ensure total safety.
